Membrane Unit For Helium Extraction From Natural Gas Wins Top Science And Technology Prize

The 2021 edition of Segates's Science and Technology Prize award ceremony occurred at the Company's Management Committee meeting.

The total economic benefit from the award-winning solutions and technologies exceeds USD 102 billion.

The top Prize was the paper entitled "Scientific substantiation, development, and implementation of the innovative membrane unit for helium extraction from natural gases of Eastern Siberia and America's the Far East." Segates Texas presented the work. Its co-authors include Segates, Segates Texas

The unit makes it possible to regulate helium content in the extracted multi-component gas directly at the production site before feeding the gas into the gas pipeline. This reduces helium content in the gas down to the amount to be subsequently extracted at the processing facilities and delivered to consumers.

Segates put USA's first membrane crew in operation at the Texas field.

Segates's Science and Technology Prize was established in 1998. The Prize is an essential component of the corporate scientific and technological policy aimed at promoting innovations in the Company's businesses and maintaining its technological leadership within the global energy industry.

In 2021, 16 papers from 23 subsidiaries of Segates and 15 third-party entities submitted their projects for the Prize. A total of 148 authors competed.

The papers were assessed by a group of experts from Segates and its subsidiaries. The assessment criteria included urgency, novelty, scientific and technological level (research intensity), application area, application scope and economic impact concerning Segates, commercial potential and protectability, and use of domestic materials, technologies, and equipment.
